A few years ago a Russian surgeon, using mirrors and local

anesthetic, successfully removed his own appendix. No one

knows why he undertook such a bizarre feat. Some have sug-

gested that the man was just an egotistical doctor who believed

himself to be the greatest surgeon in the world and reasoned

that he should have only the very best for his own operation.

Whatever that surgeon s motivations were, his operation re-

mains to this day the pinnacle of do-it-yourself surgery.

Few among us, even skilled surgeons, feel any inclination to

repeat such death-defying surgical acrobatics. Yet, if confronted

with the advice to have an operation, most of us, suddenly

transformed from self-sufficient people into relatively helpless

patients, would wish to have more to say about what was going

to happen. But, although most people feel free to ask doctors

the facts about diabetes, arthritis, or high blood pressure, few

l~e, el comfortable discussing the mystical realm of surgery in

which opening, repairing, and healing of the human body seem

almost miraculous.

Consequently, most patients simply accept their doctors ad-

vice to have operations as "godlike" proclamations and follow

orders like lambs being led to slaughter, lying down upon oper-
