The Stars and Stripes, Richard Byrd s orange-winged Fairchild,
takes off over the Bay of Whales in artist Paul Lengell~ s concep-
tion of the explorer s first Antarctic flight on January 15, 1929. Fur-
clad crew members on the ground pause during the unloading of
supplies from the three-masted ship City of New York to wave
encouragement as Byrd begins the one-and-a-half-hour flight.
The orange flag at right marks the trail leading to Little America,
Byrd s famous base eight miles away. This watercolor was created
expressly for The Explorers.
