When a play is being performed on the stageï¼Œ it is not only the actors who are workingï¼Œ although they may be the only ones seen and heard by the audience. The importance of good stagecraft is that it helps the actor to give a more convincing performanceï¼Œ thereby increas- ing the enjoyment of the audience. Backstage work must always be in keeping with the mood and atmosphere of the play being performedï¼Œ and should be carried out as accurately and as thoroughly as possibleï¼Œ bearing in mind how it will all seem from the audience s point of view. Poor stagecraftï¼Œ shoddily doneï¼Œ can break the atmosphere of a play and ruin a good performanceï¼Œ but if care and thought have been usedï¼Œ it can be very exciting to be in a team which has contributed to a success- ful production.
