Pre_face for the New Edition
We wrote the preface for the 1990 edition of Raising Kids
Who Can confident about the usefulness of family meetings
and hopeful that we would be able to reach a wide and varied
audience. The initial response to the book has confirmed our
confidence.
In the spring of 1990 we were invited to the Soviet Union
to teach psychologists, psychiatrists, and educators about Ad-
lerian psychology and parenting techniques. The response
was overwhelmingly enthusiastic. The formerly Soviet repub-
lics are well aware that raising children for a democratic
system requires qualities and abilities far different from those
necessary for survival in an autocratic society. Abilities such
as taking initiative, assuming responsibility, evaluating infor-
mation, making decisions for themselves, and communicating
effectively are especially important for people who will be
asked to vote and participate in the post-perestroika repub-
lics. An Estonian translation of the book has been completed
and will be published this year.
