Preface<br >Boston University Studies in Philosophy and Religion is a joint proj-<br >ect of the Boston University Institute for Philosophy and Religion<br >and the University of Notre Dame Press. The essays in each annual<br >volume are edited from;the previous year s lecture program of the<br >Boston University Institote. The Director of the Institute， who is<br >also the Editor of these S~tudies， chooses a theme and invites par-<br >ticipants to lecture at Boston University in the course of the aca-<br >demic year. The Editor then selects and edits the essays to be in-<br >cluded in the volume. In preparation is Volume 13， On Sel[hood.<br > The Boston University Institute for Philosophy and Religion<br >was begun informally in 1970 under the leadership of Professor<br >Peter Bertocci of the Department of Philosophy， with the coopera-<br >tion of Dean Walter Muelder of the School of Theology， Professor<br >James Purvis， Chair of the Department of Religion， and Professor<br >Marx Wartofsky， Chair of the Department of Philosophy. Profes-<br >sor Bertocci was concerned to institutionalize one of the most<br >creative features of Boston Personalism， its interdisciplinary ap-<br >proach to fundamental issues of human life. When Professor Le-<br >roy S. Rouner became Director in 1975， and the Institute became<br >a formal Center of the Boston University Graduate School， every<br >effort was made to continue that vision of an ecumenical and inter-<br >disciplinary forum.<br > Within the University the Institute is committed to open in-<br >terchange on fundamental issues in philosophy and religious study<br >which transcend the narrow specializations of academic curric-<br >ula.
