From Library Journal This low-key first novel, with a cast of eccentric characters, examines English life in the Kenya-Tanganyika border area from 1956 to 1973. Though born in Africa, Marietta still has a difficult time growing up there. Raised by servants, she regards them as friends and substitute parents but belongs to neither the native nor the European world. Her beautiful mother runs guest houses for British officials and has little time for the girl, who feels unwanted and unloved. Even schooling in England and marriage to a white hunter whose roots are in Africa do not bring the belonging she seeks. During an affair with a rising African politician, she ultimately comes to realize that she will always be a stranger and not a native. This may appeal to readers interested in Africa, though it lacks a truly engrossing narrative. Andrea Lee Shuey, Dallas P.L.Copyright 1985 Reed Business Information, Inc.
