<p>One summer long ago, the Sioux Indians were starving because their hunters could not find any game. Scouts were sent out every day, but they came back empty handed each time. One day, the scouts climbed a high hill in order to see far across the land. In the distance they saw a figure floating toward them. The approaching figure was a beautiful young woman. She wore a white buckskin outfit that sparkled in the sun. It was deco- rated with a sacred design made with brightly colored porcupine quills. She carried a large sack and a fan of sage leaves.
