Introduction
"AIDS is an unbelievable motivation to stop procrastinating about
doing the things we wanted to doma reminder that past arguments
we had aren't all that important after all. We take time now to love;
there may not be another moment as great as the one right now for
the two of us."
Those were the thoughts of a couple with AIDS who needed to
share their feelings with someone who cared and who could under-
stand.
We have written this handbook for those affected by and living
with AIDS: you, your family, someone you work with, someone you
love. Our personal involvement, as professional care providers, has
made us acutely aware of the anguish and the loneliness so many
with AIDS have experienced and of the common bond that unites all
who provide loving care for them. We feel equally the responsibility
to share the understanding, faith, and courage with which our pa-
tients live their lives.
We have drawn, first and foremost, on letters, conversations,
books and articles from, with, and by AIDS patients and their
families and friends. In addition to publications by the Centers for
Disease Control, the Public Health Service, and the World Health
