Meteorites:
Space Invaders
Earth is being invaded from space!
It's happening all the time.
Sometimes you can see the invaders coming to-
ward Earth as fiery sparks streaking across the
sky. Most people call these space invaders "shoot-
ing stars." Scientists call them meteors.
Meteors are pieces of rock or metal. As they
pass through Earth's atmosphere, these chunks
of space matter become white hot and glow in the
night sky.
On any given day, thousands of meteors speed
into our atmosphere. At certain times of the year,
great showers of these objects whiz into our at-
mosphere. Most of these chunks of space matter
are not much bigger than grains of sand. But some
can measure miles across. They are going so fast
that most of them burn up long before they can
reach Earth's surface.
