作者把重點放在國傢治理的問題上，但我覺得書中描述的環境變遷更值得注意。從彆的地方研究來看，相同的趨勢似乎大緻同時地在廣大的區域發生，而在本書中概括得尤為清楚。如果這種宏觀變化存在，就真的是一個重大的綫索，而且其意義不僅限於Mark Elvin已經討論過的經濟史領域。

The main relations in this book is about state, peasant, and the ecology focused on one grain-exporting economy. The author tries to jump out of the previous paradigms of either a despotic or limited government and elaborates these two from a "dynamic and dialectic" perspective by a very empirical manner.
