I am a Native of New Zealand now resident in Australia, working in a large public hospital in Melbourne. For several years I studied and wrote screenplays, one of which was optioned by an academy award winning Screenwriter in the U.S. In 2003, I was introduced to an elderly gentleman "who might just have a story worth telling". The day I met Lale Sokolov changed my life, as our friendship grew and he embarked on a journey of self scrutiny, entrusting the inner most details of his life during the Holocaust. I originally wrote Lale's story as a screenplay - which ranked high in international competitions - before reshaping it into my debut novel, The Tattooist of Auschwitz.

集中營裏的天使，要強裝魔鬼的模樣，就是為瞭活下去。真的很敬佩和心疼Cilka。作者在後記寫瞭一句話，總結得很貼切，“This was a girl who was sixteen years of age. Just sixteen. I became captivated by Cilka, unable to understand or comprehend the strength someone of her age must have had to survive the way she did. And why did she have to be punished so harshly for choosing to live?”

故事融匯瞭我今年最著迷的題材：二戰 + 前蘇聯大愛作者寫的第一本書，對Cilka這個人物留有很深的印象，沒想第二本書依然那麼好看。欣賞Cilka的堅韌、勇敢、善良。承受命運的磨難，走到黑暗隧道的另一頭，要有強大的內心，智慧的頭腦，和頑強的生命力。被放逐到西伯利亞的囚犯們，原來是這樣的悲慘。

Just like «The Tattooist of Auschwitz», this book affected me by so many ways. Cilka’s courage and empathy towards others are so precious. She is meant to survive Auschwitz and Vorkuta. She deserves to find true love and to live a peaceful life after her ruined adolescence. She is the strongest protagonist I’ve ever encountered so far. 敬佩。
