In Seven Against Thebes a royal family is cursed with self-destruction, in a remorseless tragedy that anticipates the grandeur of the later Oresteia. Suppliants portrays the wretched plight of the daughters of Danaus, fleeing from enforced marriage; as refugees they seek protection, and must plead a moral and political case to gain it. And in Prometheus Bound, Prometheus is relentlessly persecuted by Zeus for benefitting mankind in defiance of the god. Christopher Collard's highly readable new translation is accompanied by an introduction that sets the plays in their original context, and together with the notes considers theatrical and poetic issues, as well as details of content and language. 仅存的古希腊历史剧。希腊人从波斯人的视角写希方的胜利（拟想的演出中必然视觉效果出众，尤其是服装展现出来的异域风情；也同Xerxes剧末灰头土脸衣衫不整形成对照）。结构分配匀称合理，情绪推进也因而显得稳健（恐惧—不详预感—焦虑—确认灾难降临后哀悼—寻求到解释后进一步陷入悲恸）。报信人关于海战的描述堪称教科书般的战争叙事，悬宕笔法，细节精确。对白方面仅有两处（皇后与歌队交流希腊军队的即战力；老国王Darius鬼魂质问皇后战败的详细情况）是交锋轮替的。「轭/拉近/奴役」的意象以不同形式复现（皇后噩梦中儿子给战车上轭、波斯大军不可一世横跨达达尼尔海峡天堑、意欲奴役希腊人等）。
