将近两年前的寒假，读了作者的《梦醒子》，个人觉得，对于沈艾娣，历史书写的优美是超过具有解释力认识的得出的。本书从孙中山就任临时大总统写起，终止于孙中山归葬紫金山，讨论了民国男女形象的变迁、礼仪习惯的改易（历法、礼节）、政治身份的形成等，最后焦点对准国民党如何对原有政治符号进行再次利用和强化，与民国早前政治文化形成对比，突出政治主流的形成，政治符号在政府权威下的推广，民众自由政治表达和认同的终结，政治符号诠释权集中于一党，重塑民国为党国。政治仪式、符号和国民身份的互动是本书讨论的核心，发人深省之处在于前后两期政治文化的发展过程，而作者对于孙中山赴任和中山陵的奉安大典描绘尤为生动震撼。抛开形象、身份、以及如何选择和制造传统与记忆这样比较时髦的观点，作者对于蒋介石政府下的社会结构分析亦颇有新意。
