It does deserve its reputation ,but the finale is such a sudden.

An emotionally disturbed woman in a haunted Gothic house. Terror and death are inevitable. Jackson once again showcases her ability to surprise the reader, as she did in “The Lottery”. But this one appears more incessantly torturing.
