二战初任海军大臣，1940年5月继任英国首相，参加了德黑兰三国首脑会谈和雅尔塔会议。1951年至1955年再度出任首相，1953年获得嘉得勋位和诺贝尔文学奖。12月参加英、美、法三国首脑百慕大会议。1955年正式退休。�

著有《第二次世界大战回忆录》(六卷)、《英国民族史》(四卷)等。
