諾森布裏亞（Northumbria）的國王埃德溫（Edwin）就基督教信仰的接納問題進行冥想，並同他的朋友和顧問們討論的故事。 他的一個大臣痛陳瞭我們對於自身終極命運的無知之苦：他將命運比作一隻麻雀，從一端飛進一個明亮的廳堂，後又從另一端飛齣。在堂內，這隻麻雀處於庇護之下，遠離堂外冰冷的暴風雨，但很快它就會消失不見，“再一次進入周而復始的寒鼕。所以人類的此生僅僅存在一小會兒，”他宣稱，“然而我們對於接下來或在此之前發生的是什麼卻一無所知。” 我們都會死，這誰都知道。但對於等在我們死亡之後的事情，我們就和埃德溫的大臣一樣全然無知。即便如此，從古希臘和希伯來時期起，就存在著一段人們關於來世的想象史，漫長而豐富，既有關於我們個人死後的，也有關於曆史終結之後的。
