The Thatcher Revolution of 1979-90 transformed British political life. By the 1970s, the Keynesian consensus established in the 1940s was malfunctioning, and the conventional wisdom was that it would either stagger on or it would be replaced by socialism imposed by the trade union power that had rendered the country ungovernable. The Governments of Margaret Thatcher broke the unions and led Britain firmly down the economic liberal road of Western consumerism, radically changing public policy and administration in the process. Experienced author and academic Geoffrey Fry broadly predicted the Thatcher Revolution, but is neither a proponent of nor an enemy of Thatcherism. He is thus well placed to produce a dispassionate analysis of what happened.
