Lisa Lowe关注小说中主体的形成，每章节都是一个阿尔都塞意义上的召询发生的系统，各系统中，主体形成又都失败、未完、破碎——无论是作为法语使用者、美国公民、韩国人，等等——失败原因在于主体身份的杂交性，性别、族裔、种族等特质无法为单一系统（帝国、国族、宗教）所包含。就此而言，一个系统的召询，往往能被个体利用来反对另一个系统，意识形态力量最终相互抵消。Cha对主体形成的描述，扩展了阿尔杜塞的“召询”：由于小主体内部无法化约的差异，大小主体之间便不存在镜像的、二阶的认同关系，召询是个不均衡、非统一的矛盾过程，其内部固有矛盾更因外部系统交织所产生的矛盾而加剧；同时，“坏主体”也因多系统的共存而拥有抵抗系统的能动。Lowe提倡一种结合身份政治与差异政治辩证关系的“新政治”，大概类似于交织政治吧。
