This innovative approach to mental health seeks to explain a variety of psychological trends, including the steep rise in depression, the sharp increase in the prevalence of existential disorders, and the emergence of consumption disorders. By shedding light on the interaction between modernity and mental health, Schumaker illuminates the emerging patterns of mental disturbance while also offering new and more effective intervention and preventior.

“現代性”的文化基礎，起碼就其部分而言，是一種以孤獨與異化為特點的過度個人主義。具有“現代性”的個體，除卻其自己，便再無它物可依憑瞭。乃至就連其僅有的自己，也是空洞的、去社會化的存在（empty self）。然而現代社會，就社會與經濟活動而言，又是以高度的人際競爭為特點的。在這樣一種社會結構中，個體價值不免常常受到威脅。因為我們每個人，很難永遠立於不敗之地。競爭一方麵固然可以最大限度的激發個體潛能，從而塑造齣種種的個人主義神話。但另一方麵，卻又産生瞭不可承受的失敗之重。
