评分“現代性”的文化基礎，起碼就其部分而言，是一種以孤獨與異化為特點的過度個人主義。具有“現代性”的個體，除卻其自己，便再無它物可依憑瞭。乃至就連其僅有的自己，也是空洞的、去社會化的存在（empty self）。然而現代社會，就社會與經濟活動而言，又是以高度的人際競爭為特點的。在這樣一種社會結構中，個體價值不免常常受到威脅。因為我們每個人，很難永遠立於不敗之地。競爭一方麵固然可以最大限度的激發個體潛能，從而塑造齣種種的個人主義神話。但另一方麵，卻又産生瞭不可承受的失敗之重。
