作者父亲的一个好朋友是第四装甲师的一名谢尔曼炮手，和他聊过许多在法国和欧洲发生的坦克战斗。他在担任谢尔曼炮手时最可怕的一场战斗是法国的一场夜战，几辆坦克被困在一个小村庄里，不过和《狂怒》里发生得不太一样。他们在没有步兵保护的情况下被德军步兵包围。他说最恐怖的事情就是听到德军步兵们叫嚷着爬上坦克试图用刺刀打开舱门。在《狂怒》中的一个小错误就是谢尔曼坦克是有舱门锁的，可以用闩锁锁住舱门。德军步兵没有铁拳，就打算用刺刀撬开舱门，这时候排里有个人说“用.30口径互相射击”。然后用航向机枪和同轴机枪互相射击后基本上干掉了所有的德军步兵。
