這本書講瞭什麼呢？命運，霸淩，階級，威權統治，獵巫運動，真實而殘酷地發生在Green Lake；名人，黑人，白人，窮人，小人，愛人，錶麵人，懦弱的人，倒黴的人，舉起拇指的人，利欲熏心的人，輪番登場，人性盡顯。結尾的呼應構建的敘事圓環完美而圓潤，我卻依然疑慮，濕綠湖裏教師和洋蔥匠的悲劇，乾綠湖裏男孩們所受的奴役，如果沒有史丹利的偶然刨齣（直到最後他也並不瞭解女賊的故事），如果沒有女律師的解救（盡管她為的是史丹利倒黴父親的走運發明），這一切又有誰人知道？恐怕隻有響尾蛇和黃斑蜥蜴瞭。
