How is a hired gun, an assassin paid to kill others in cold blood, able to remain a moral man? Demeter Granci faces this dilemma after years of being "Balan Balins," a famous hired gun in the old West. Balan must face his past when he finds his real name listed on a contract with two other men. Arizona politician Abraham LaBourn wants all three men dead before he runs for governor, and Balan must take the contract before someone else does. When Balan learns who LaBourn really is, he gives up his ranch and all his friends in order to take the man down. He and his wife head to Arizona to end the political career of LaBourn, knowing they may never return to El Rancho de Marginado, the only home they have ever known.
