許多章節都讀瞭兩遍，Houlgate寫得簡潔明晰，作為一本導論，沒有過多涉入黑格爾身處的語境和傳統，而是專注於呈現每一章最核心的論證邏輯，有提綱挈領、提供綫索之效。比較遺憾的是，限於篇幅，理性章及之後的論述太少，而且難免掛一漏二之嫌。無論如何，是一本對於初學者非常友好的導論！

現象學的，太現象學的！絕對知識需要我們放開我們自己並讓存在在思想中自行舒展。這當然也是我們所看到的在現象學中所運用的“方法”。自然而然，現象學本就是絕對知識的産物。不過在現象學與嚴格意義上的絕對知識之間存在著一個重要的區彆。後者是哲學“科學”，思辨哲學的第一部分。它的任務在於揭露思想中的存在本質（丁三東思中之是），還有它在思想與存在的統一性中的”原理‘。相比之下，現象學研究的不是存在，而是意識的經驗。而且，在哲學中也已剋服瞭在現象學中介於意識及其客體對象之間的一種區分。故而現象學的興趣在於意識及其客體對象之間的關係，哲學則關心“純粹概念及其前進運動”。在第四章霍爾蓋特對現代精現學史的簡單梳理也很有意義，譬如費爾巴哈歪談語言、馬剋思史不及義、科耶夫就曉得主奴意識、皮平放大觀念論的自我意識等視角
