Michael Dylan Foster tracks yôkai over three centuries, from their appearance in seventeenth-century natural histories to their starring role in twentieth-century popular media. Focusing on the intertwining of belief and commodification, fear and pleasure, horror and humor, he illuminates different conceptions of the "natural" and the "ordinary" and sheds light on broader social and historical paradigms--and ultimately on the construction of Japan as a nation.

近年來的妖怪研究大概無齣其右者。將妖怪定義為the weird，探討它們與自然史，科學和媒體等結閤産生的不同discourse，印象深刻的是藉助平成狸閤戰講解現代化和妖怪式微的例子，以及後來妖怪文化比如裂口女逐漸藉助變化的社會語境復蘇的例子。這本書居傢旅行裝x可備。最初是為一節課翻過，記得米國同學對百鬼夜行沒有直觀印象，我還找來平成狸閤戰裏麵的百鬼夜行片段給他們看。拿手裏質感也不錯。

過於Foucauldian瞭吧…… 意外的沒有那麼foucauldian 感覺過於clean cut，也沒有什麼特彆的見解。總體而言是一本很不錯的入門書啦。
