The scientific research enterprise is built on a foundation of trust. Scientists trust that the results reported by others are valid. This third edition of On Being a Scientist reflects developments since the publication of the original edition in 1989 and a second edition in 1995. A continuing feature of this edition is the inclusion of a number of hypothetical scenarios offering guidance in thinking about and discussing these scenarios. On Being a Scientist is aimed primarily at graduate students and beginning researchers, but its lessons apply to all scientists at all stages of their scientific careers.

美国科学院、工程院、医学研究所联合出的一本关于在科学生涯中如何做出负责任行为的指导书。通篇基本上都在传输真善美以及对科学理想的追求blabla，可以当打发时间看。比较有意思的是文中给出了一些小案例，文末也相应作出一些讨论，不过都没给出很确切的答案。哈哈，人和人之间的本来就不是非黑即白，确实不能一概而论，也没人可以为冲动行事埋单。本文有一句话：As with all relationships between humans，there can be no guarantee for compatibility，but both sides should act professionally......这是一句十足十的大实话，也是金玉良言，写到我心里去了，凭这句话我给本书打四星。
