评分可以当作伊朗近代史入门来读。成书于九十年代，作者作为一个历史学家并没有展开伊朗伊斯兰革命的分析。什叶派对殉难，顺从强权和违抗强权上因为历史原因而存在的不可化解的矛盾（胡赛因之死）作者花了很多时间讲述什叶派的神学逻辑上导致的伊朗不可避免的陷入两难。20世纪后叶的中东国家都不可避免的陷入了世俗化的泛阿拉伯主义还有此失败后而兴起的泛伊斯兰主义。伊朗都是其中的异类（波斯人和逊尼派）伊朗在身份上的特立独行或许注定了它在政治上的独一无二。本书里避免讨论了霍梅尼和他的“守护者”逻辑。但是伊朗革命又不得不提霍梅尼。我觉得这成了唯一的缺憾。虽然霍梅尼获得了革命的成功，但霍梅尼的理论并没有被所有的逊尼阿亚托拉所认可，伊朗的政权依旧是个实验
