The imperial residence of Chengde was built by two powerful and ambitious Manchu emperors between 1703 and 1780 in the mountains of Jehol. This volume, the first scholarly publication in English on the Manchu summer capital, reveals how this unlikely architectural and landscape enterprise came to help forge a dynasty's multicultural identity and concretize its claims of political legitimacy. 建筑史和景观学积累不够，简单翻阅。在作者看来清代似乎存在三大政治历史中心：作为大清龙兴之地和凝聚满洲认同的盛京沈阳，作为天下管治中心的帝都北京，及缩微帝国格局景观、融合多种信仰、向前来朝贡的内亚诸族和外来使节展示帝国之多民族多文化特性、又靠近木兰围场方便保持狩猎传统的热河承德避暑山庄。通过对比避暑山庄规划、景观设计、建筑特色、信仰成分和帝王活动的中心，作者认为承德在多元民族方面比北京和盛京更为明显，也有助于满洲认同（围猎仪式）。一个问题是：北京也有雍和宫，同样的方法是否可以运用到雍和宫上，把这个多民族中心也移回北京呢？

通过建筑、景观、堪舆等文化角度，及热河地区在移民垦殖中的变革，分析承德在清帝国图景中的多元意义。关于文化图景的分析冗长又“外宾“，对中国读者来讲意义不大。御道、垦殖两部分还可以。对于关注中国本土那种以营建、规划、历史文化为主题的“城市史”的研究者而言颇可一读，其他的大概只需翻翻就够了。
