本書是美國著名中國現代美術史學者安雅蘭1998年在紐約古根海姆博物館策劃的大型展覽“危機中的一個世紀:20世紀中國藝術中的現代與傳統”的展覽圖錄。該展覽試圖對一個世紀以來的中國藝術作一次概括性的迴顧和總結。在書中作者把現當代中國美術劃分為四個時期，即“中國畫的革新，1850一1950";“現代主義者，1920-1950";“新中國藝術，1950-1980";以及“傳統的改造，1980至今”，並分彆描述和分析瞭各個時期的風格特點以及其時代特徵。
