第一次讀David Crystal的書是Language Death，後來纔發現原來他寫過幾本語言的百科全書，他研究涉及的領域相當廣，博學的人簡直太有魅力。這本書是對語言的通識介紹，都是非常簡單的道理，可以作為茶餘飯後的閱讀。雖然不是學術寫作，但是說到底科研總結齣的知識就應該是以最簡單的語言惠及最廣的受眾的。

「1801年，探險傢洪堡在南美洲尋找奧裏諾科河的源頭。他碰到一群加勒比印地安人，他們剛攻擊瞭附近的部落，殺光所有人，但把鸚鵡帶迴來瞭。鸚鵡就跟平常一樣喋喋不休。洪堡聽到鸚鵡在說話，發覺牠們說著屬於被謀害的印地安人的語言，他決定謄錄下來，記住那種語言的發音。說那種語言的人都死瞭，隻剩下鸚鵡可以幫他。兩百年後，美國雕塑傢Rachel Benwick決定讓這種語言重生。她找來兩隻南美洲的鸚鵡，把洪堡寫下的詞教給牠們。然後她把鸚鵡放進大籠子裡用樹葉蓋住，再配上叢林的聲音，放在藝廊裡展示。鸚鵡很開心地說個沒完。突然間，古老的語言復活瞭。雖然隻是鸚鵡學舌，聽的人仍覺得毛骨悚然。」

當時豆瓣閱讀活動看見的，讀瞭幾章後發現特彆照顧英語水平低的人（像我）每章有短遣詞造句還簡單，就愉快地拿來當讀本瞭，時不時拿來讀上幾章練練舌頭。挺有效果的，開始讀的時候坑坑巴巴的，讀到後麵就十分順溜瞭（但是現在口語還是差唉）/但是也由此，內容太簡單瞭，信息量太少，語言學的門都沒入，講瞭個輪廓的輪廓
