討論關於長城的文化神話，總的來說是把長城具有的unity和historical continuity作為不斷重新整閤的結果。具體case study有曆時性地討論一些著名的長城故事是如何逐漸變化成型的（比如孟薑女的故事），也有分析現代以來長城如何被徵用以投射不同的觀點。看得齣來巫鴻在紀念碑性那本書中關於“長安的形象”一章對本書的影響。
