对于学习历史的学生，这本书还是应该好好看看的。特别是从高中走上来的对历史认识太局限的同学，读过这本书后，会对历史的人物有新的认识。 读过黄仁宇先生的大历史，再读周锡瑞的地方史，又是不一样的滋味。

我向来都很喜欢旅居西方的一些华人史学家写的研究中国历史的史书，在他们的书中，透过扑朔迷离的历史原貌，各类事件更加翔实丰满。故事在讲述时，也是小角度切入，不紧不慢，娓娓道来，比起国人四平八稳的著述风格，至少是对于我这类人来说，倒很是受用。虽然的确是有不...

Esherick's dissertation book. Very detailed and nuanced account of 1911 revolution in the two provinces. Obviously he did abundant archival work. It apparently lies the foundation for his Boxer book. "The structure of society" is his particular perspective to understand Chinese political and social movements, and it make sense. A STRONG UCB STYLE.
