What can we learn about the Chinese revolution by placing a doubly marginalized group--rural women--at the center of the inquiry? In this book, Gail Hershatter explores changes in the lives of seventy-two elderly women in rural Shaanxi province during the revolutionary decades of the 1950s and 1960s. Interweaving these women's life histories with insightful analysis, Hershatter shows how Party-state policy became local and personal, and how it affected women's agricultural work, domestic routines, activism, marriage, childbirth, and parenting--even their notions of virtue and respectability. The women narrate their pasts from the vantage point of the present and highlight their enduring virtues, important achievements, and most deeply harbored grievances. In showing what memories can tell us about gender as an axis of power, difference, and collectivity in 1950s rural China and the present, Hershatter powerfully examines the nature of socialism and how gender figured in its creation.

作者简介

贺萧（Gail Hershatter），曾求学于美国汉普郡学院、中国南开大学、美国斯坦福大学，获斯坦福大学博士学位，曾任美国亚洲研究学会主席，现为加州大学圣克鲁斯分校历史系自身讲座教授。著有《天津工人，1900-1949》，《个人的声音：20世纪80年代的中国妇女》，《危险的愉悦：20世纪上海的娼妓问题和现代性》，《中国妇女在漫长的20世纪》，《记忆的性别：农村妇女和中国集体化历史》等。

我觉得最大的价值是对口述史本身的探讨，以及对所谓历史客观性、真实性的反思。对历史的记忆甚至是歪曲在贺萧看来都是充满价值的，因为这其中揭露出个体与集体记忆的差异性。如果只是局限于这其中的故事，就难体会到它的价值和妙处了。因此贺萧说，中国史还需要与更多、很广泛的理论相结合，我是非常同意的。

中文版马上要出了。

记忆的性别变成“记忆的女性”和“女性的记忆”，恰好说明女性是用来标记男性的性别，只有女性是性别，是被标记的，被言说的，被男性意识操演的。而呈现女性的口述史，则是在男性用笔（菲勒斯）写就的历史和菲勒斯中心主义中突破，让女性张口以自我言说，发出女性的声音。难能可贵。

口述史。乡村妇女被拉进建设现代中国的进程中，同时还要负担生育和家务。使用假名对访谈对象的做法不很理解。
