约翰·威廉斯（John Williams，1922—1994），美国作家、诗人、学者。辍过学，当过电台播音，从过军。退役后入大学就读并获博士学位，于1954年—1985年间在母校丹佛大学任教，教授大学英语及创意写作。曾编选《文艺复兴时期的英语诗歌》，也创作过两本诗集。

一生只写了四部小说：《惟有黑夜》（1948）、《屠夫十字镇》（1960）、《斯通纳》（1965）、《奥古斯都》（1973，本书获得当年美国国家图书奖）。

译者：郑远涛，生长于广州，在北京度过七年，大理两年，现居美国旧金山市郊，向太平洋开轩。英文系毕业，从事翻译十余年，译著成书出版的作家包括玛丽·瑞瑙特（亚历山大三部曲）、约翰·伯格、约翰·威廉斯与张爱玲等。第30届梁实秋文学奖（翻译类译诗组）评审奖得主。

看这本书的契机是看完Madeline Miller的Galatea后想看 Ovid 的The Metamorphoses，但是在读前言的时候，发现他被当时的君王Augustus驱逐出罗马，而恰好又知道有 Williams的Augustus这样一本书存在，于是决定先补一下对Julio-Claudian dynasty的认知（虽然都只是小说而已）这本书的起始是凯撒之死，终结提到了少年的 Nero，可以说跨越了了从Augustus到远程办公的疯王Tiberius到更疯狂残暴的Caligula到结巴Claudius再到弑母者Nero。这本书简直太神了。虽然作者说是受到Robert Graves的 I，Claudius 的影响，但是我看了几页后者，发现Augustus 真的青出于蓝！！！

At times slightly monotonous but nevertheless gripping enough for me to read on. As a biased Livia admirer, I can't say I'm entirely happy with Williams' portrait of the first Roman Empress. The highlights to me are the journals of Julia. As for Augustus, Book III sums it all: A benevolent tyrant, a man of contradictions.

看完了觉得蛮震撼的，作者文笔相当不错。Augustus从一个青涩少年成长为站在权力顶峰之人，虽然坐拥四海却也注定孤独一生，问心无愧就好。
