Penguin 1980年版，Stephen Gill的引言十分精彩。引言第4章（21頁）講到，此書“有關道德，但不預設道德立場”（Adam Bede is a moral but not moralistic book），立刻聯想到毛老師講過的《金碗》。果不其然，這篇引言也提到瞭《金碗》，說Eliot不像James那樣有意隱藏作者聲音，而恰恰相反。
