近代的英國鄉村愛情故事，完全可以拍成當代愛情劇。亞當·貝德算是有為青年，雖然傢境一般，父親也是頗為不良（後淹死），但依舊認真生活，工作優秀，孝敬父母，周圍的人們都交口稱贊，也是一般鄉紳的優秀女婿人選。不過顯然不太解風情，所以在年輕的姑娘們看來應該是有個木訥...

三星半。小說題目改成<Hetty>可能更為妥當。人物性格刻畫實在有點蒼白和單一。很模糊，第一本小說，也是正常。基督徒的思想和傳教意義是小說的重點，而不是情節，就目前來看的話。
