迈克尔·翁达杰

加拿大小说家、诗人。1943年出生于斯里兰卡科伦坡，十一岁时随母亲移居英国，十九岁移居加拿大，加入加拿大国籍。先后毕业于多伦多大学和皇后大学，曾长期在约克大学教授英语文学。

自1962年出版第一部诗集以来，迈克尔·翁达杰已经出版六部长篇小说、童年回忆录《世代相传》，以及多部诗集、剧本、文学评论集。他也积极参与加拿大独立出版社马车房出版社的诗歌编辑工作。他于1992年出版的小说《英国病人》荣获布克奖，后被导演改编成同名电影，2018年，《英国病人》斩获布克文学奖成立50年来最佳小说的殊荣。其2000年出版的小说《安尼尔的鬼魂》获加拿大吉勒奖、加拿大总督文学奖、法国美第奇奖。2007年出版的小说《遥望》获加拿大总督文学奖。

Ondaatje's prose is at times startlingly lyrical, and as he chases Bolden through documents and scenes, the novel partakes of the very best sort of modern detective novel--one where the enigma is never resolved, but allowed to manifest in its fullness. Though more 'experimental' in form than either The English Patient or In the Skin of a Lion , it is a fitting addition to the renowned Ondaatje oeuvre .

读完之后才知道这是个真实的故事. Buddy Bolden真的活过，他的即兴演出虽然没有被录制下来却影响了很多后来的爵士音乐家。 31岁，为了属于他的艺术，疯了但是也成就了伟大的音乐。同样出色的配角是个专门拍摄妓女的belloque。 belloque是buddy唯一认可的听众也是他灵感的来源。虽然他不承认。我认为buddy自己已经成为了艺术，不光是他的音乐更多的是他的精神。

4.5 He came here and placed my past and future on this table like a road./As if everything in the world is the history of ice. 嗑藥派的代表作，Ondaatje最愛的一個男人和兩個女人之間的自毀式愛情，後面接著寫的In the Skin of a Lion應該是脫胎自這本稍嫌炫技但已經非常成熟的處女作。流連於紅燈區的殘疾攝影師雖然戲份小但非常吸睛，Ondaatje筆下的角色全都是註定一生在路上流浪，既被安穩的幸福吸引但又無法放棄自由的可憐人。

第二本Ondaatje 写得真是不错。为什么还没有颁给他诺奖？厚重的真实感与悬于历史之上的幻觉以道听途说，绯闻，野史重建过往再次验证了发生了的事件的无限延展的可能

Very Ondaatje!读的时候可以看到后来写出英国病人的那种碎片呓语的模式，但是又多了几分戏谑，几分律动，毕竟是关于上个世纪初的爵士传奇。虽然相对于后来的小说少了故事的完整性和戏剧化，但我还是非常喜欢他历史与想象交错的写作手法，不断转换的人物自白, 以及近乎诗歌的prose style.
