卫礼贤（Richard Wilhelm）无疑是中国文化在德国最重要的传播者之一。他在1926年出版的著作《中国之魂》（ „Die Seele Chinas“）正好触动了当时德国读者的神经，他们在第一次世界大战的灾难之后，试图从遥远的东方寻找新的意义所在，而卫礼贤在书中正是把“来自中国的人生智慧”推崇为“现代欧洲的良药和救赎”。到今天，卫礼贤之所以仍被几乎所有对中国感兴趣的德国人所熟知，归因于他对中国哲学核心著作的译介工作。他不仅把儒家思想的经典，如《论语》和孟子的著作译成德文，还翻译了道家的经典（《道德经》、《庄子》）、古老的神谕之书《易经》，以及墨翟的著作：一共八卷译文，并且一版再版。虽然现代汉学界早已认为卫礼贤的译文过时，但德国的读者不管这些。直到今天，卫礼贤的中国古典哲学译本仍然广受喜爱。
