衛禮賢（Richard Wilhelm）無疑是中國文化在德國最重要的傳播者之一。他在1926年齣版的著作《中國之魂》（ „Die Seele Chinas“）正好觸動瞭當時德國讀者的神經，他們在第一次世界大戰的災難之後，試圖從遙遠的東方尋找新的意義所在，而衛禮賢在書中正是把“來自中國的人生智慧”推崇為“現代歐洲的良藥和救贖”。到今天，衛禮賢之所以仍被幾乎所有對中國感興趣的德國人所熟知，歸因於他對中國哲學核心著作的譯介工作。他不僅把儒傢思想的經典，如《論語》和孟子的著作譯成德文，還翻譯瞭道傢的經典（《道德經》、《莊子》）、古老的神諭之書《易經》，以及墨翟的著作：一共八捲譯文，並且一版再版。雖然現代漢學界早已認為衛禮賢的譯文過時，但德國的讀者不管這些。直到今天，衛禮賢的中國古典哲學譯本仍然廣受喜愛。
