James Fenimore Cooper (l789-1851)

小说家。1789年9月15日生于新泽西州的伯灵顿。2岁时，全家迁移至纽约州的库珀斯敦。附近的湖泊森林以及有关印第安人的传说，都深深吸引着他。1806年到商船上学习航海，后在安大略湖畔一海军基地参加造船工作，曾被任为海军上尉。1811年辞去海军职务，同一个地主的女儿结婚，定居在库珀斯敦。31岁时开始写小说。第1部小说《戒备》于1820年自费出版，很不成功。在妻子鼓励下，他改变方向，写了一部他认为“应当是纯粹美国式的以爱国为主题的书”，即《间谍》。小说在1821年出版后受到欢迎。以后又写了反映边疆生活的《拓荒者》(1823)和反映航海生活的《舵手》(1824)，在美国文学史上开创了3种不同类型的小说，即革命历史小说《间谍》、边疆冒险小说《拓荒者》和海上冒险小说《舵手》。

1826年出任美国驻法国里昂的领事，并到意大利和英国旅行。除了写海上冒险小说之外，还写了反映欧洲生活的三部曲：《刺客》(1831)、《黑衣教土》(1832)和《刽子手》(1833)，表现教权和封建势力在资本主义兴起之前已日趋腐朽和衰落。

1835年回国后写的小说《归途》和《家乡面貌》(1838)不仅讽刺了美国社会，还讽刺了库珀斯敦的一些人物的伪善和愚意，因此而受到舆论攻击。晚年他甚至支持美国对墨西哥的侵略战争。1851年9月14日去世。

库珀在30年创作生涯中写了50多部小说和其他著作。他最有成就的作品，如《皮袜子故事集》五部曲，对美国的西部小说产生很大影响。至今仍拥有不少读者。
