This change is explored through the device of setting the novel's action during the 1840s, similarly a period of considerable turbulence as the United States experienced the onset of rapid commercial and industrial expansion. Through the relationships between Austin Sloper, a celebrated physician, and his sister Lavinia Penniman, his daughter Catherine, and Catherine's suitor, Morris Townsend, James observes the contemporary scene as a site of competing styles and performances where authentic expression cannot be articulated or is subject to suppression.

感覺是暗黑版的半生緣，Henry James有一種把狗血故事包裝高級的魔力，明明是一個獵金男倒貼追富傢女的故事，他卻講得有層次有深度，小說裏依稀看得到貴婦畫像和鴿翼的影子:那些欲說還休的感情，那些朦朧曖昧的狀態。James的小說總是提齣問題，等待讀者去解決，所有的答案既在小說裏也不在小說裏，如人飲水，冷暖自知。
