本来没什么预期，但是读完意外发现还挺有趣的，相当于1990年代北京的一个全景吧：从图像入手，最后自己变成一个（另一种意义上的）图像。当然还有很多值得讨论的点没怎么提，但是作者自己关切的主旨基本都在这书里达成了。

城市形象的建构是个蛮有意思的主题，作者的灵感或许来自于Lefebvre对conceived space和lived space的区分。配合中国为人熟知的城市化进程，问题意识简直不能更明显。可惜本书的主体部分暴露了学术上的随意和论证上的急躁。比如，把ideology当作筐，什么都往里装；modernity虽贯穿始终，却看不出跟日常话语中的modernization有何区别；掌权者的面目一团模糊，时而是北京市政府，时而是中央政府，时而是勾结的官商；修王府井、建大剧院、申办奥运会，北京人民一直被迫害、从未受益过。尤其是第五章，堆砌材料可以，能稍微有条理一点么。总之，本书在以上方面为后来者提供了绝佳的反例。PS：同样的题目，90年代的大连会不会因为更“纯粹”而更好写？

又细读了一遍，还是很有趣，但或许是学科的关系，理论构建显得比较羸弱；其次，作者对有枪的真是充满了深深的敌意，总觉得这种敌意影响了她的某些判断，所以十年后再重新检视，国家社会关系远不像她呈现的那么简单。时效性太强是否也意味着生命力过弱？
