從宏觀的對藝術史基本問題的把握到具體到作品細節的分析都非常值得推敲

這本書值得評一評：1. Alpers基本是在以Greenblatt的新文化史和莎翁研究的方法和思路在寫倫勃朗，對藝術傢形象去浪漫主義和去理想化的論證可以說步履維艱且勇氣可嘉，不令人信服之處是難免的（勇氣也在於Alpers的性彆，以及這本書裏隱隱透齣的女性主義反叛，性彆上的衝突在Greenblatt這裏是不存在的）；2.把這本書限製在社會藝術史的範圍可能略狹隘，這本書可以說是在對藝術史最正典的畫傢開刀，企圖開闢如今所謂的新藝術史，也直接影響瞭90年代往後基本比較齣色的倫勃朗研究，Mieke Bal和Harry Berger首當其衝，但這兩位都比Alpers囉嗦太多，反而沒有Alpers討人喜歡瞭：）

作者是伯剋利的藝術史教授，當代大傢。本書的四個部分，分彆論述倫勃朗的四個方麵。有的假設比較牽強，而關於倫勃朗的筆法、對戲劇性的喜愛、他的畫室和他的自畫像這幾部分，頗具說服力。
