印象比较深的是作者想象的慈禧和圆明园里的宫殿，读起来很迷幻。整本书带有卡夫卡和康拉德的影子。里面的海景颇有一种末世感。想起圣经里一句话：“Vanity of vanities; all is vanity. One generation passes and another generation comes, but the earth abides forever.”

死亡的意象笼罩全书。英格兰东北部的游记串起对暂时终结的帝国主义和殖民主义的思考。殖民带来的权力结构和资本并没有在现代社会消失，而是加入了下一轮不公平的资源分配和话语暴力。这本读完感觉没有《奥斯特里茨》舒适。中国对于Sebald来说果然还是他者中的他者。
