This collection of new translations brings together the small proportion of Kafka's works that he thought worthy of publication. It includes 'Metamorphosis', his most famous work, an exploration of horrific transformation and alienation; 'Meditation', a collection of his earlier studies; 'The Judgement', written in a single night of frenzied creativity; 'The Stoker', the first chapter of a novel set in America and a fascinating occasional piece and 'The Aeroplanes at Brescia', Kafka's eyewitness account of an air display in 1909. Together, these stories reveal the breadth of Kafka's literary vision and the extraordinary imaginative depth of his thought.

評分譯者Michael Hofmann在前言中提到卡夫卡對於畫《變形記》插圖的建議:‘not, pace Nabokov, with an entomologically or coleopterically correct beetle, (…), but with a picture of a man lying in bed.’

You see, I was never a fan of Metamorphosis, and could not at all laugh at its absurdity; he said that I was too young, and too happy. "Didn't it ever occur to you that one day when you wake up, you just want to transform into something else and escape from the world?" "No," I shook my head, "not really."
沒想到最愛的故事居然是In the Penal Colony,也非常喜歡The Judgement。
Austere, economical, rich, humorous and sad. One simply cannot interpret Kafka's text in a Freudian style nor from a religious point of view (fucking distasteful and outrageously wrong). 2.
