英文译本依然可读性很强，Gary教授的序跋都很精彩。翻译几乎就是一种再创作，从英文本读出了中文本没有的“精准感”，这有可能是译者选用学术词汇的缘故。Social structure, social transitions,各种power都可以直接和英语文献中的很多研究对话，读中文时却易丢失这敏感。译成英文后，在英语语境中更加容易发现这本书的“中国性”，各种儒家典籍与历史典故的穿插造就了与纯西方学者著作不同的气质。费先生充满洞察力，尽管很多东西没有深入进去，但在很多方面指明了方向：社会结构、权力结构、文化观念、社会转型、关系纽带、法治德治。而这些洞见多是源于中西文化之间的比较，比较的视角非常明显。诚如Gary所言，这本书让西方学者反省到自己的理论也是一种“地方理论”而已。117页讲政治与教育。

上课用的教材，先自己看了一遍中文版。关于乡土社会中环境、文化、社会结构等元素之间复杂关联的推论合理可信且有趣，但个人更偏好有统计支持的论断。同时因为对文中罗列之现象并未有太多感同身受或耳濡目染，故而对书中的结论持保留态度。
