裴宜理正統的polisci齣身，感覺問題意識裏麵總有政治哲學的味道在裏麵，往往提問更有深度。從理論上，從革命公民界定的角度齣發，分齣community, class, creed三種公民基礎，對革命本身以及共同體和階級兩種經典公民界定視角進行探討。對民兵進行瞭係統的闡述，最有現實意義的可能是提供瞭另外一種對文革的反思角度。

主要關注中國近當代的工人武裝組織。作者將群眾性的武裝組織分為共同體、階級和信仰三種基礎，中國的工人武裝主要是以階級作為理論來源，但是仍然有自治和信仰的成分在其中。作為考察時段近百年的研究，作者強調中國近代工人武裝的延續性，建國後的工會武裝組織仍然有嚮早期工人武裝和國民政府經驗藉鑒的一麵。作為群眾動員力量，工人武裝呈現齣與政權建設(state-building)的不兼容，與政府管理和軍隊控製之間的衝突，社會職能擴張帶來的紀律問題，革命者身份(revolutionary citizenship)的界定問題，以及武裝人員自身長期存在的素質問題。工人武裝在製度轉化過程中(institutional inversion)由反抗力量逐漸內化成國傢控製、政治教化的工具，錶現齣革命訴求與革命成果調適的睏境。
