A biting satire about a young man's isolated upbringing and the race trial that sends him to the Supreme Court, Paul Beatty's The Sellout challenges the sacred tenets of the United States Constitution, urban life, the civil rights movement, the father-son relationship, and the holy grail of racial equality--the black Chinese restaurant.
Born in the "agrarian ghetto" of Dickens--on the southern outskirts of Los Angeles--the narrator of The Sellout resigns himself to the fate of lower-middle-class Californians: "I'd die in the same bedroom I'd grown up in, looking up at the cracks in the stucco ceiling that've been there since '68 quake." Raised by a single father, a controversial sociologist, he spent his childhood as the subject in racially charged psychological studies. He is led to believe that his father's pioneering work will result in a memoir that will solve his family's financial woes, but when his father is killed in a police shoot-out, he realizes there never was a memoir. All that's left is the bill for a drive-thru funeral.
Fueled by this deceit and the general disrepair of his hometown, the narrator sets out to right another wrong: Dickens has literally been removed from the map to save California from further embarrassment. Enlisting the help of the town's most famous resident--the last surviving Little Rascal, Hominy Jenkins--he initiates the most outrageous action conceivable: reinstating slavery and segregating the local high school, which lands him in the Supreme Court.

雖然有很多因為背景知識空白和單詞量的蒼白沒太明白 也不影響我覺得這是本好書。種族話題並不鮮見 但第一次讀到用反嚮歧視的角度來展開很尖銳但卻幽默 非常幽默 用看似不可能的情節來揭示種族歧視的消失隻是幻想（黑人發起隔離運動 黑人因為蓄奴被送上最高法院）。栩栩如生的每個人 不斷有發人深省的詰問。有中文版我一定再讀一遍。
评分美國大選的聒噪之後，看這本書正是時候，這書諷刺美國社會的種族問題，不迴避問題，也不推卸責任，不費力地諷刺，太好笑瞭。
评分一個人不瞭解黑人的曆史和掙紮的話就說不上瞭解美國吧 書其中的reference比較難get到 不過這個idea真的很好
评分諷刺的真的用力過猛但是讀起來也是爽快，作者每隔幾句抖一個包袱真的不纍嗎？那天聽同事評價覺得十分中肯，正因為每一句話都帶著嘲諷的調調，一本書讀下來覺得與主人公的隔閡橫跨瞭一個大峽榖吧，並沒有被故事所觸動
评分Is integration, forced or otherwise, social entropy or social order? 問題很深刻嘛! 讀瞭引子就覺得這書也太敢寫瞭簡直無法隨便安利 很多典故和黑點都讓人拍手叫絕 還實名cue瞭好幾位大法官 最醜的電影明星 最白的rapper 最蠢的知識分子在貴圈最受尊敬真是無法反駁哈哈哈!
