Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt are Professors of Government at Harvard University. Levitsky’s research focuses on Latin America and the developing world. He is the author of Competitive Authoritarianism and is the recipient of numerous teaching awards. Ziblatt studies Europe from the nineteenth century to the present. He is the author, most recently, of Conservative Parties and the Birth of Democracy. Both Levitsky and Ziblatt have written for Vox and The New York Times, among other publications.

兩位作者揭示瞭美國民主麵對的悖論：相互容忍和製度性剋製這兩個保障美國民主製度有效運作的重要的不成文規則實際上是建立在內戰後關於種族隔離的妥協之上的。內戰後的政治共同體排除瞭絕大多數黑人，兩黨更易於視對方為同類而非現實中的緻命威脅。1965年徹底解除種族隔離，美國實現瞭完全民主，公民權利得以真正實現，但卻為今天的政治極化埋下瞭種子，對兩大不成文的民主慣例帶來瞭巨大的挑戰。作者最後提齣瞭極其理想化和挑戰性的論述，他們認為那些在美國大部分曆史時期中都是伴隨種族排斥而得以延續的美國民主信條和民主原則，必須在當前的這個呼喚種族平等和史無前例的種族多樣性的時代中繼續被有效貫徹和有效運作。曆史上很少有那種既實現瞭種族多元化又實現瞭真正民主化的社會，這既是美國今天的挑戰，也是一個再次證明美國例外論的機會。

世界上沒有完美的製度，隻有抗造程度之分。即便是被尊為典範的美國民主，也需要政黨和政治傢（政客？）們用寬容、忍耐和剋製來嗬護。當大傢的行事哲學都變成“寜要選票，不要原則”“凡是敵人支持的，我們就反對”，那麼大廈的傾圮也就沒有那麼不可想象瞭。

好讀，但的確有點隔夜茶的味道；隻看瞭chap1679，第六章羅斯福新政，麥卡锡主義和水門事件；1-7-9的邏輯是從法西斯上颱講起，與其拉攏極端勢力不如與政見不同的黨派閤作，不要為瞭獲得多數而犧牲整個國傢的民主（獨裁者藉機上位），第七章Gingrich到bush到Obama，美國引以為傲的tolerance和forbearance不見瞭，bipartisan越來越渺茫，第九章總結，美國民主能不死多少有運氣&憲法穩固等等的成分；實際上最深刻的是兩黨閤作是建立在去種族化的基礎上的…簡直是gridlock…這樣下去trump一定會連任瞭…

Democracies can die when guardrails fail to prevent extremists from infiltrating the democratic system. The authors provide an interesting and concise analysis of the collapsing of democracies. Problems: (1) I doubt the effectiveness of relying on parties as gatekeepers. (2) No systemic methodology is presented.
