This is a grand, ambitious book that should be required reading for every academic.

全书建立在一个也许有点简单的traditional/juridico-ecclesiastical vs. modern/rational/politico-economic 的框架上，但整体下来干货还是很多。十分感谢这本书为我刷新了不少等待刷新许久却迟迟没能刷新的半空白区域。去搜了一下作者，没想到看到了以下悼词：“But the real irony of Bill’s achievement as one of the foremost scholars of the history of universities is much sadder than this...Bill was never offered a permanent position."
