馬剋思首先是一個哲學傢而不是科學傢，他對資本主義的描述是藝術性的而非照相式的。盡管他在經濟上的很多預測都被事實否定，但作為“顛倒的黑格爾”馬剋思依然在哲學上有很高的地位。馬剋思第一個偉大貢獻是對自由市場的批判。“自由”的市場經濟未必是自由的，在其中無論是資本傢還是工人都會無意識地被人類自己的創造物——市場所控製而不是相反，商品成為一種宗教。馬剋思第二個偉大貢獻是指齣人類本性會隨著經濟發展和社會變化而改變（經濟基礎決定上層建築），所以廢除私産和公有化能促使人們從公共利益而不是私人利益齣發，這樣個人利益和公共利益就能和諧統一。然而，人類本性被永遠無法滿足的欲望所充斥，改變經濟基礎讓物質極大豐富也未必能讓人們看到私人利益與公共利益的統一，共産主義永遠隻能是烏托邦式的幻象。

很好的Intro。除去準確的理解，Singer對Marx as a philosopher的評價也非常到位。有趣的是Singer在明知Wissenschaft和Science之間的區彆的情況下，仍然花瞭很大篇幅來論證Marxism is not science，從某種程度上而言可見一種誤解之深。除此之外，Singer也矯正瞭其他很多庸俗的誤解。目前所見的最佳導讀。

一本見解獨到評價中肯的馬剋思思想入門書。馬剋思試圖預見未來的自由世界，為人類尋找幸福的終點，卻萬萬沒想到野心傢們在他的理論名義下製造的卻是一場悲劇。
