We all recognise the true, full-blown psychopaths, such as notorious serial killers. But we encounter mild psychopaths everyday, those who do not reach the level of their infamous full-blown counterparts, yet still share some of their traits and cause anguish for all of us directly in our personal lives. The author spotlights here how to see, understand and cope with mild psychopaths. Psychopaths are not all failures in life; many are quite successful and held up as models. They include, for example, politicians who lie to get votes, salesmen and businessmen who dupe the public, and doctors who perform unnecessary surgery just because they need the money. These behaviours are often accepted, and even admired and encouraged by society. The author examines widely-held beliefs about mild psychopathy, then shows us methods to deal with these people, and to identify such traits in ourselves. His conclusions and vignettes show that psychopathy is a widespread problem, not one confined to 'low life' or to people in mental hospitals. And psychopaths are not all amoral people with no conscience; some do want to escape their aggressive and socially harmful world where being honest, forthright and ethical is abnormal. The book offers an eclectic approach based on classic therapies to facilitate help and self-help methods for the victim and the psychopath.
